Heritage Tree Preservation in Arrowtown, Queenstown
Species: Sycamore (Acer pseudoplatanus)
The Challenge
A 120-year-old sycamore in Arrowtown's Historic Heritage Precinct had developed a significant dead-wood load and several crossing branches causing bark abrasion. The tree is heritage-listed and contributes to Arrowtown's famous autumn colour display. The property owner wanted to improve the tree's health and appearance while meeting strict council heritage requirements.
Our Approach
Our senior arborist prepared a detailed heritage tree assessment including aerial inspection using climbing techniques. We developed a multi-year crown restoration plan approved by Queenstown Lakes District Council's heritage team. Phase one involved careful removal of deadwood, crossing branches, and minor crown lifting to restore the tree's natural form. We used hand tools for precision cuts to minimise wound size.
The Result
The sycamore responded excellently to the initial treatment, with vigorous new growth the following spring. The tree's structural integrity improved significantly, and its autumn colour display was enhanced by the improved crown form. The council was delighted with the sympathetic approach, and the property owner committed to the ongoing maintenance plan. The tree is now expected to remain a healthy feature of Arrowtown for decades to come.
"ArborCare treated our heritage sycamore with the care and respect it deserves. Their knowledge of heritage tree requirements was exceptional, and the result speaks for itself."
